United Kingdom Road Atlas

Cover of UK Big Road Atlas

It took a lot of experimentation to get things lined up when you print the double-sided pages contained inside this United Kingdom Road Atlas. I hope that this Atlas prints correctly for you so all my time and effort was not wasted. The two page files are each over 1MB to get a good print quality. This is a large format Road Atlas which would be full size 11 inches wide by 15 inches tall just like the Road Atlas I used to navigate around Britain in 1986.

  1. Download the following three files on to your hard drive. Click on each file name to display the image on your screen. Then right click on this image and select "save image as" to a location on your hard drive.

  2. Open them up in your graphics program (I use Jasc Paint Shop Pro).

  3. The double-sided pages are printed on to A4 paper.  For this to work you MUST use a sheet of A4 paper. On your printer there is a paper guide I hope. Use this to ensure your sheet of paper sits snuggly in the paper tray. This is important to ensure each page feeds into the printer in the same way. My printer properties were set to Best Photo, PhotoEnhance, Plain Papers, A4 and Portrait.

  4. Set the Size and Position to 100% Scale, Custom offset, Left offset 0.00 and Top offset 0.00.

  5. Print one of the 'pages' files. Turn the A4 page over and print the other 'pages' file. Fingers crossed. Hopefully you now have perfectly lined up double-sided pages. If not, I'm sorry but I tried my best.
  6. Open the last file and print the cover onto glossy photo paper.
  7. Allow time for the ink to dry before cutting everything out. I strongly advise using a sharp craft knife and a ruler.
  8. First cut along between the horizontal black guide marks. Then cut down between the vertical black guide marks.
  9. Fold each page in half.
  10. Stack the pages together one inside the other. Use the page numbers to get them in the right order.
  11. Cut the cover out in the same way as you did for the pages. That is along the horizontal lines first and then down the vertical lines.
  12. Fold the cover in half.
  13. Place the pages inside the cover.
  14. Two staples will secure the pages to the cover. Hold the pages in place inside the cover while you make two sets of needle holes down through the center fold. I used a large sewing needle and a hobby hammer for this task.
  15. Cut two small lengths of fine wire each about 1/2" long. Bend the ends over at right angles just like an open staple.
  16. From the outside of the Road Atlas insert the ends of one wire staple through two of the holes. Push the ends down, on the inside of the book, to close the staple. Repeat for the other staple.
